The museum has a unique collection of ship models, antique travel guides, centuries-old charts, paintings, weapons, and navigational instruments. This superb collection tells the story of the maritime past of the Netherlands. The jetty outside the Museum provides a permanent berth for a replica of the Dutch East Indiaman ""Amsterdam"". On its first voyage to Asia, the Amsterdam ran aground on a sanbank off the English coast. The replica was built in the nineteen-eighties. Actors playing the sailors provide a ""life-like"" impression of life on board the ""Amsterdam"".
