Castle District - Budapest - Hungary
The Castle District is one of the most romantic pedestrian sections in Budapest. A medieval little town with atmospheric streets, picturesque houses, gas lamps and beautiful monuments. The main street of the district - Tßrnok Street - ranges from D?sz Square to today's district centre, Matthias Church. Colourful little houses border the square and the neighbouring streets. The winding streets and narrow houses date back to the Middle Ages, occasionally decorated with valuable Gothic window and door frames. Elegant Baroque and Louis XVI-style palaces are relics of the restoration work after the Turkish occupation.

Central Market Hall - Budapest - Hungary
The largest and richest indoor market in Budapest was built at the end of the 19th century when open market facilities were no longer able to satisfy the needs of a growing city. The construction of five market halls was thus started and the Grand Market Hall was the most attractive and interesting shopping site. Its neo-Gothic architecture links the building to a forgotten ?poque, but its state-of-the-art steel structure and logical interior furnishing show early signs of modern functional architecture. It is still a very busy and vivid market, definitely worth a visit if you wish to get a glimpse of the everyday life of ordinary Hungarians. Foreign diplomatic delegations often get shown round here. Since being restored to its original glory in 1994, it is well worth a visit.

A thousand years ago Pest, which was just an island in the Danube, was surrounded by a branch of the river. Over the centuries, the riverbed slowly dried up, leaving a small ditch occasionally filled with drain water in the empty land around the old city walls. Late last century an idea was floated to turn the ditch into a channel with bridges at each avenue and ornamental parks on each side.

Fisherman's Bastion - Budapest - Hungary
Completed in 1905 on the site of a former fish market - this is where the name comes from. It has never served a defensive purpose: it is an excellent lookout place. The floodlit row of bastions offer a panoramic view onto the other bank of the Danube. The cityscape opening up from there, including the Fishermen's Bastion, has been part of UNESCO's World Heritage since 1988. The crypt of the ancient St. Michael Cemetery Chapel (the first written record dates from 1443) was opened to the public in 1997.

Gendal Restaurant - Budapest - Hungary
George Lang and Ronald S. Lauder became the owners of Gundel on September 25, 1991. At that time they decided to do a complete renovation of the building and to create a luxurious, modern restaurant of the highest international standards. George Lang poetically expressed their intentions in the following words: "" We have decided to wake up the Sleeping Beauty from her long sleep, knowing however that the person who proposes to the beautiful princess will be put to all kinds of tests before his wish will be fulfilled by the king..."" After the turmoil of the privatization process the overall reconstruction of the restaurant began. Traditional architectural motifs discovered in old documents were used during the rebuilding. The Gundel restaurant is supposed to be the best place in town.
