RIDEAU LOCKS. One of Canada's nine historic canals, the Rideau Canal stretches 202 km from Kingston to Ottawa. Construction began just after the War of 1812, and what was intended as a supply route if the Americans attempted another invasion is now an elaborate system of 47 locks and 24 dams used mainly by recreational boaters.You'll appreciate the Rideau Canal system as a 19th-century engineering feat; the canal takes you 84m over the rocky Canadian Shield, and lowers you 49m to Lake Ontario. Each winter, in the heart of Ottawa, an eight km stretch of the Rideau is the focal point of winter celebrations when it freezes over, becoming the longest skating rink in the world.
