Nathan Philips Square/City Hall - Toronto

 Previous Next

NATHAN PHILIPS SQUARE/CITY HALL. City Hall and Nathan Phillips Square, n.w. corner of Queen and Bay Streets, is a striking complex created by Finnish architect Vilijo Revell. The two-story rotunda contains a graceful column that serves as a pedestal for the domed amphitheater of the Council Chamber, itself flanked by two curved office towers. The reflecting pool, in Nathan Phillips Square in front of City Hall, is converted into a skating rink in winter. The Square serves as a forum for multicultural festivals, art shows and civic ceremonies as well as a setting for the Peace Garden.
