Constructed by the Jesuits of chunambo on granite foundations, with brick guardrooms and cannon housings, the fort was part (of a complex together with the college and church of St. Paul's. Soon after Mascarenhas arrived to be governor. He turned the Jesuits out and the fort became government house until 1749, when it was moved to a building on the Praia Grande.
