St Pietersberg Caves - Maastricht

 Previous Next

St. Pietersberg Caves. Mount Sint Pieter is a hill just south of Maastricht, formed out of a marl table-land by the erosion of the valleys of the river Meuse and Jeker. This table-land was formed 80,000,000 years ago, during the Cretaceous Era, by the accumulation of the remains of shellfish etc, which inhabited the sea in prehistoric times. There are many old and new charcoal paintings and signatures to be seen on the walls: Don Alva (1570), Dona Isabella de la Tas (1577) P. Stas (1548), Napoleon (1803).
