Zaanse Schans - North of Holland
Next
Zaanse Schans. Zaanse Schans, with its traditional Zaanland houses, windmills and warehouses, gives an impression of what the Zaanstreek looked like in the 17th and 18th centuries. The Zaanstreek was at that time one of the first industrial areas in the world. Hundreds of windmills were engaged in the production of linseed oil, paint, snuff, mustard, paper and woodworking. Because of the soft subsoil, light materials had to be used. The Zaanland architecture was characterized by the use of wood instead of stone. The Zaanstreek has traditionally had a great appeal for foreigners. Peter the Great made the Zaanstreek his workplace for a while. Napoleon called the area the loveliest he had ever seen.
