Old Quarter - Hanoi - Vietnam
Old QuarterAs the oldest continuously developed area of Vietnam, Hanoi's Old Quarter has a history that spans 2,000 years and represents the eternal soul of the city. Located between the Lake of the Restored Sword, the Long Bien Bridge, a former city rampart, and a citadel wall, the Old Quarter started as a snake and alligator-infested swamp. It later evolved into a cluster of villages made up of houses on stilts, and was unified by Chinese administrators who built ramparts around their headquarters. The area was named ""Dominated Annam"" or ""Protected South"" by the Chinese.

One Pillar Pagoda - Hanoi - Vietnam
One Pillar PagodaLocated in Ngoc Ha, Ba Dinh precinct, Hanoi, the One Pillar Pagoda is a cultural and historic relic, unique for its architectural features. The pagoda was first built in 1049 under the Ly dynasty, on the west side of the ancient Thang Long capital. Its original name was Dien Huu, expressing the wish for longevity for the second Ly King. The pagoda is built in the shape of a lotus blooming on its stem. The pagoda was built after the description of a dream of King Ly Thai Tong , who reigned between 1028 and 1054, in which Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara, the Goddess of Mercy, led him to a lotus flower. The actual One-Pillar Pagoda is the miniature reconstruction of a large, ancient, royal Buddhist building.

Presidential Palace - Hanoi - Vietnam
Presidential PalaceOriginally, here stood the palace of the French governor of Cochin China, built in 1868. Later the building was the official residence of the South Vietnamese president Ngo Dinh Diem. The palace was bombed in February 1962 by two South Vietnamese fighter planes in an attempt to assassinate Diem. The president and his family hid in the cellar and remained unscathed. The original building was then replaced by a new one, which now is the Hall of Reunification. Inside the new building everything was left the way it was found on April 30, 1975, when North Vietnamese forces took Saigon.
