Located between the Lake of the Restored Sword, the Long Bien Bridge, a former city rampart, and a citadel wall, the Old Quarter started as a snake and alligator-infested swamp. It later evolved into a cluster of villages made up of houses on stilts, and was unified by Chinese administrators who built ramparts around their headquarters. The area was named ""Dominated Annam"" or ""Protected South"" by the Chinese.

Heroes Square - Budapest - Hungary
Budapest's grandest square closes off Andrßssy ·t, with City Park right behind. Marking the end of stylish Andrßssy ·t, this monumental edifice is a majestic memorial of the thousand-year history of Hungarians in Europe. Each part of the monument represents an important section of Hungarian history. In the focus of the semicircular colonnade stands the bronze statue of Archangel Gabriel on a 36-meter-high column, which was awarded a Grand Prix at the Paris World Exposition in 1900. According to an old Hungarian legend, the angel appeared in the dreams of first Hungarian king Saint Stephen and gave him the holy crown. The equestrian statues of the seven legendary chieftains who lead migrating Hungarians to the Carpathian Basin stand on the pedestal of the obelisk. The two circular peristyles present statues of famous kings, emperors and personalities of Hungarian history. The solemnity and pomp of the statue park is further heightened by the two old museum buildings on either side.

Hillsborough - County Down
Hillsborough. The Georgian village of Hillsborough is rich in history. Hillsborough Fort with its eight-foot high earth ramparts, dates back to around 1650 and was used as a Royal Fortress by King Charles II. Other buildings of note include the market house, the parish church of St Malachy, built in 1636 and the Castle, seat of the former Governors of Northern Ireland.
