Chateau Neercanne - Maastricht
Chateau Neercanne. On the southern side of Maastricht, close to the Belgian border, lies the 17th century Chateau Neercanne, which is currently being used as a restaurant. At one time there were four separate gardens laid out on terraces at various levels. The 3rd garden was completely re-landscaped and opened again in mid-1997. The landscape architect, W. Snelder, sought inspiration for the design of this baroque garden from information obtained from archeological research, from an old etching of the garden and a lyrical ode to the garden written by the Frisian, Francois Halma in 1715.

Fort St Pieter (Fortifications) - Maastricht
Fort St. Pieter. At the most northerly point of the Sint Pietersberg mount, Fort Sint Pieter was constucted between 1701 and 1702. This fortification was built to prevent Maastricht being bombarded in the future from the Sint Pietersberg mount - as had been the case in the siege of 1673 by the Sun King Louis XIV. The fort, which was visited by Tsar Peter the Great some years after its completion, has a pentagonal ground plan and a ring gallery pierced by gun embrasures. In the innermost part of the fort a deep well can be found together with a bomb-proof chambers. The fort is connected to the system of tunnels, which run under the Sint Pietersberg mount.
