Dom Pedro V Theatre - Macau - China
Dom Pedro V TheatreFully refurbished and air-conditioned, the 'Dom Pedro V' Theatre and the Macau Club are situated opposite St. Augustine's Church. The Macau Club includes a theatre, a large hall and committee rooms. The club was designed by Pedro Germano Marquez in 1859. The theatre is a colonnaded building constructed in the grand neo-classical manner. There is a large entrance hall hung with an elegant chandelier, and the doors are swept by red velvet curtains. The theatre itself is roughly oval with a balcony round the upper part of the auditorium, and is intimate in its proportions. The stage is rather narrow but deep. The feeling of exclusiveness created by its size is emphasized by the plush velvet seats and the general touches of extravagance, such as the cut- glass door handles, the red plush curtains and the crystal chandeliers.

Dominion Square - Macau - China
Dominion SquareSt Dominic's has a violently dramatic past. In 1644 a military officer who supported the Spanish against the Portuguese was murdered at the altar during Mass. In 1707 the Dominicans sided with the Pope against Macao's bishop in the Rites Controversy. When local soldiers tried to enforce an excommunication order on them, the friars locked themselves in the church for three days and pelted the soldiers with stones. In 1834 the monastic orders were suppressed and for a time the church was used by the government as barracks, stable and public works office.
