Carlsberg Glyptotek - Copenhagen - Denmark
The founder of the Glyptotek was the brewer Carl Jacobsen (1842-1914), who also started one of the largest private art collections of his time. He named it after his Carlsberg brewery, adding 'Glyptotek', meaning 'collection of sculpture'. Jacobsen was equally interested in French and Danish art, and antique art originating from the Mediterranean area. Carl Jacobsen subsequently bequeathed his collection to public ownership. Two deeds dating from 1888 and 1899 committed the recipients, the Municipality of Copenhagen and the Danish state, to supporting the construction of a museum. In 1902, Carl Jacobsen secured the financial basis for the running of this by setting up the Ny Carlsberg Foundation, which has been jointly responsible for running the museum as a self-governing institution since 1953, along with the Municipality of Copenhagen and the Danish State.
