Arc de Triomphe. At the western terminus of the Avenue des Champs-Elysees, the Arc de Triomphe moves every heart. In 1940, Parisians were brought to tears as the Nazis stepped through the Arc; after four years of Nazi occupation, the city was liberated by British, American, and French troops, who marched through on August 26,1944, to the roaring cheers of thousands. The world's largest triumphal arch was commissioned in 1806 by Napoleon in honor of his Grande Armee. The terrace at the top has a fabulous view of Avenue Foch and the city.

Bastille - Paris
Bastille. Charles V built the Bastille prison to guard the eastern entrance to his Capital; it became a state prison under Louis XIII, usually housing religious heretics and political prisoners. On July 14, 1789, Revolutionaries stormed the Bastille for its supply of gunpowder. By 1792, nothing was left of the prison but its outline on the place. New Opera. On July 14, 1989, Francois Mitterrand inaugurated the glittering Opera Bastille, 120 Rue de Lyon to celebrate the destruction of Charles' fortress with the construction of an opera hall.

Chatelet - Paris - France
Place Vendome. The place Vendome, three blocks north along rue de Castiglione, hides 20th-century offices and luxury shops behind 17th-century facades. In the center of the place is a column cast from 1250 Austrian and Russian bronze cannon captured in battle by Napoleon.
