Dam & Royal Palace - Amsterdam
The Royal Palace & Dam Square. Today's royal palace was built in the 17th-century as Amsterdam's Town Hall. The long wars with Spain had ended in 1648 and last Amsterdam could concentrate on beautifying the city. Its Town Hall was to be an eighth wonder of the world. The most famous architects, painters and sculptors of the day combined on this imposing project: Jacob van Campen, Artus Quellinus, Govaert Flinck, Ferdinand Bol. The city was at the height of its glory as a world trading power, and this is reflected in its public buildings. Later, when Louis Napoleon became king of Holland in 1808, he chose Amsterdam as his home and the Town Hall became a Royal Palace.

Dominion Square - Macau - China
Dominion SquareSt Dominic's has a violently dramatic past. In 1644 a military officer who supported the Spanish against the Portuguese was murdered at the altar during Mass. In 1707 the Dominicans sided with the Pope against Macao's bishop in the Rites Controversy. When local soldiers tried to enforce an excommunication order on them, the friars locked themselves in the church for three days and pelted the soldiers with stones. In 1834 the monastic orders were suppressed and for a time the church was used by the government as barracks, stable and public works office.

Fisher Studios Houses - Chicago
Fisher Studios Houses. One of the city's finest pre-World War II modern designs, this is an exceptional-and rare-example of the Art Moderne style of architecture, which was influenced by European modernism. The unique layout of the 12 units and their common courtyard--which, together, occupy an extremely narrow site running perpendicular to the street--has contributed to their desirability as residential apartments. Further distinguishing the building is its handcrafted ornamentation by prominent artist Edgar Miller. The building was commissioned by Frank Fisher, Jr., an executive of Marshall Field & Co.
