Castle District - Budapest - Hungary
The Castle District is one of the most romantic pedestrian sections in Budapest. A medieval little town with atmospheric streets, picturesque houses, gas lamps and beautiful monuments. The main street of the district - Tßrnok Street - ranges from D?sz Square to today's district centre, Matthias Church. Colourful little houses border the square and the neighbouring streets. The winding streets and narrow houses date back to the Middle Ages, occasionally decorated with valuable Gothic window and door frames. Elegant Baroque and Louis XVI-style palaces are relics of the restoration work after the Turkish occupation.

City Hall - Geneva - Switzerland
This is the administrative headquarters of the local government. The unusual square ramp of the staircase made it easier for messengers to arrive on horseback in days gone by. The ""Alabama"" plaque is a reminder that the Anglo-American conflict was the first international dispute to be resolved in Geneva. Don't miss the summer concerts, given in the interior courtyard.

City Hall - Philadelphia
Directly at the heart of Philadelphia, on Center Square, a National Historic Landmark rises 510 feet into the air. The exact geographical center of William Penn's original plan for Philadelphia, Center Square, known today as Penn Square, was designated by Mr. Penn to be the location for a building of ""publick concerns"" - home of Philadelphia's City Hall. The huge granite mass of City Hall, throughout its 100+ year history, has indeed been a building of ""publick concerns"". An elaborate temple of local politics, City Hall is one of the nation's finest examples of French Second -Empire Architectural style. Controversy has surrounded the building from its earliest conception in 1860 to the present day. It has weathered severe criticism, hints of bribery and graft, campaigns to demolish it, shortages of funding to maintain it, and disrespect of vandals who deface it. Yet, it has also earned a great deal of respect and admiration as a unique architectural and sculptural achievement.

Dam & Royal Palace - Amsterdam
The Royal Palace & Dam Square. Today's royal palace was built in the 17th-century as Amsterdam's Town Hall. The long wars with Spain had ended in 1648 and last Amsterdam could concentrate on beautifying the city. Its Town Hall was to be an eighth wonder of the world. The most famous architects, painters and sculptors of the day combined on this imposing project: Jacob van Campen, Artus Quellinus, Govaert Flinck, Ferdinand Bol. The city was at the height of its glory as a world trading power, and this is reflected in its public buildings. Later, when Louis Napoleon became king of Holland in 1808, he chose Amsterdam as his home and the Town Hall became a Royal Palace.

Dominion Square - Macau - China
Dominion SquareSt Dominic's has a violently dramatic past. In 1644 a military officer who supported the Spanish against the Portuguese was murdered at the altar during Mass. In 1707 the Dominicans sided with the Pope against Macao's bishop in the Rites Controversy. When local soldiers tried to enforce an excommunication order on them, the friars locked themselves in the church for three days and pelted the soldiers with stones. In 1834 the monastic orders were suppressed and for a time the church was used by the government as barracks, stable and public works office.

Heroes Square - Budapest - Hungary
Budapest's grandest square closes off Andrßssy ·t, with City Park right behind. Marking the end of stylish Andrßssy ·t, this monumental edifice is a majestic memorial of the thousand-year history of Hungarians in Europe. Each part of the monument represents an important section of Hungarian history. In the focus of the semicircular colonnade stands the bronze statue of Archangel Gabriel on a 36-meter-high column, which was awarded a Grand Prix at the Paris World Exposition in 1900. According to an old Hungarian legend, the angel appeared in the dreams of first Hungarian king Saint Stephen and gave him the holy crown. The equestrian statues of the seven legendary chieftains who lead migrating Hungarians to the Carpathian Basin stand on the pedestal of the obelisk. The two circular peristyles present statues of famous kings, emperors and personalities of Hungarian history. The solemnity and pomp of the statue park is further heightened by the two old museum buildings on either side.
